A site visit was arranged for Civil engineering students to the rainfall effected area of Kodagu. In the recent past Kodagu faced tremendous natural disaster. A team comprising of Prof. Sachin K C and Prof. Roja H D Assistant professors and students from Department of Civil Engineering visited the affected areas such as Makandhur, Hebbatagiri along Sampaji road on 30th August, 2018 in order to collect soil and rock samples to analyze the geotechnical and geological conditions of the affected areas. Mr. Nagendra, Assistant Director Department of Mines and Geology Madikeri also accompanied them.
A guest talk was organized by the department of Civil Engineering on “ Condition of roads in Coorg” by Col. Vivek Bopanna a retired colonel of Indian Army on 1st, September 2018. He explained the probable conditions for the road failures in Kodagu due to heavy monsoons and explained the different methodologies that can be adopted for the construction of roads in hilly terrain and approaches to overcome such calamities. Adding on he also gave suggestions for budding Civil Engineers to maintain the quality of Civil Engineering works through systematic scientific approach
Workshop on Microsoft Word and Power Point to the students were conducted by Department of Civil Engineering on 10th September 2018, where the typographical guidelines to draft the VTU project was lime lighted by Prof. Sachin K C and Prof. Bharatesh R Assistant professors, Department of Civil Engineering
A Webinar on Ready Mix Concrete in construction : Issues and solutions organized by Department of Civil Engineering in association with Ultratech cements on 4th of October 2018 from 4PM-5PM. Webinar on the the above topic was presented by Mr. Kshemendra Nath P of Resilient Energy India Pvt.Ltd. He stressed on the importance of Ready Mix Concrete in modern day construction. This session helped the students as well as the faculties of Civil Engineering Department to understand the insights of Ready Mix Concrete in construction.
In order to cater the creative minds of Civil Engineering students and to make them abreast with the practical side of their coursework, a industrial visit to Hassan was organized by the Civil Enginnering Department on 5th of October 2018. A group of 114 students were given an opportunity to learn the basics aspects of Civil Engineering. Prof. Bharatesh , Prof. Sachin K C, Prof. Impa K A, Prof. Anjali B U, and Prof. Pavan Kumar, Assistant professors, Civil Department were deputed to the visit. Details of Industrial Visit are as below:
1) During the visit students were educated on the construction procedure of flexible and rigid pavements at Arkalgud. Students got an opportunity to understand the mechanism of Hydraulic structure, explanation regarding catchment area and canal, canal network, spillways, flood management, drainage gallery at Hemavathi Reservoir, Gorur, which was organized for 3rd semester students of Civil Department, so as to strengthen academic curriculum.
2) The students of final year were taken to the waste water treatment plant Gorur to gain knowledge regarding the working methods and employment practices of waste water treatment units. Also a visit to the Hassan Milk diary (KMF) unit was undertaken to gain the knowledge on dairy products as well as the waste treatment facilities adopted for diary waste.
During the visit, students of pre final year were taken to the S M Krishna Nagar layout, Arisikere road, Hassan to get an idea about the basic concepts regarding the town planning. The same batch of students were taken on a site visit to a under construction residential building. This visit helped them in gaining knowledge regarding building planning and construction activities. The students of all the semesters of Civil Engineering were taken on a vist to the Gorur Dam. Mr. Venkataramanappa Assistant Engineer who guided the students regarding the working principles of the dam. A visit to the nearby Hydro power generation unit helped the students to gain knowledge regarding its working aspects.
The Coorg Institute of Technology Cricket Premium League (CPL) was organized by the Department of Physical Education in association with Department of Civil Engineering. Wherein 6 teams participated in the event. The final match was organized on 24th October 2018, the team CRIC Believers won the winners trophy and CIT Gladiators bagged the runner trophy. Prof. Kavitha P C, Principal distributed the trophies in the valedictory event.
A training session on Total station- a modern surveying equipment was organized by Department of Civil Engineering in association with BRIC for pre final year students on 22nd and 23rd October, 2018. In this session faculties explained about the working principles of total station and also final year students trained and taught them the working mechanism of total station to pre final year students. This session would be able to cover all perspectives of total station as well as its working mechanism which will help them during their survey camp
Coorg being the hilly region of western ghats is more prone to landslides. So a project entitled “ Landslides of Coorg”, is being carried out by the final year students of Civil Department guided by Prof. Roja H D and Prof. Sachin K C, Assistant Professors, Department of Civil Engineering. The meeting was organized at Board room to discuss about the execution of project work and same was presented in front of Dr. Shanthi Machaiah, Board of Director, Kodava Education Society and Prof. Pramukh Ganapathy C, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering on 2nd November, 2018.
The discussion focused on the methodology to be adopted in the study of causes of landslides and also to add on to the scientific perspective for the disaster. It was decided to study the rock formation, soil parameter study, geological topography and morphological study to substantiate the causes of catastrophic disaster scientifically.
